AXIS OF MEMORY

It returns to you. It comes back into orbit.

Photography was my first love. And somehow, after taking a few different paths, it found its way back into my orbit this year.

Traveling to Cape Town for the first time, a city overflowing with art, culture & creative expression, I felt that familiar spark of inspiration come alive again. & naturally, I couldn't imagine being somewhere so rich in stories without creating something of my own.

Some stories are not imagined. They are discovered.

Among the winding markets of Cape Town, surrounded by old African textiles and hidden treasures I found myself following a familiar creative instinct: to let the story unfold before deciding what it should become.

And from that process, Axis of Memory was born.

An axis is a point of balance- a place where seemingly opposite forces meet. The old and the new. The masculine and the feminine. Strength and softness. Movement and stillness. It is the center that allows everything to exist in harmony.

Memory exists there too.

This series was an ode to ancestry, identity & the stories we carry within us. A meeting of past & present, where ancient traditions find new expression through a modern lens. A celebration of where we come from, who we are & the beautiful ways our heritage continues to evolve through generations.

These two men came from different parts of Africa, each carrying the stories, traditions & spirit of their own heritage. As I wrapped them in mud cloth, they shared that they felt like royalty. Like chiefs. As though they were reconnecting with the strength, pride & legacy of those who came before them.

That was the intention all along.

Axis of Memory became a bridge between ancestry & the present-a weaving together of what has always been with what is still becoming. It is the balance between the masculine and feminine energies we all carry, the yin and the yang, the wisdom of our ancestors and the lives we are creating now. It reminds us that evolution does not ask us to leave our roots behind; it asks us to carry them forward.

Our roots are never truly lost. They live within us, quietly waiting to be remembered.

For me, this series was about wrapping these men in the legacy of Mama Africa, especially in front of the lions head ~her spirit, her roots, her remembrance. Creating a space where they could not only see where they came from, but feel it.

A space where heritage became something to wear with pride~ not only on the body, but within the soul.

This is why photography & styling continue to find their way back to me. They have never been about creating beautiful images alone. They are a practice of remembrance. A form of storytelling. A devotion to capturing a moment in time. They remind me that when we find our axis~ our center ~ we discover that the past & the future are not separate at all. They are in constant conversation, forever orbiting one another, waiting for us to remember who we have always been.

There comes a time when, no matter how hard you look the other way or choose a different path, what is truly meant for you will always find its way back.
